Who is Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s running mate?

US Democratic nominee Joe Biden announced Senator Kamala Harris as his vice presidential pick, and a potential White House successor. She is the first woman of color on a major party’s presidential ticket

Kamala Harris is an American politician and a lawyer who is a member of the Democratic party and is currently serving as a junior US senator from California since 2017.

Harris is 55 years old and was born in Oakland, Calif. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Doug Emhoff

Harris’ mother is a Tamilian from South India and her father is Jamaican. Kamala Harris has a sister, Maya Harris, who is also a political activist and has worked in the Hillary Clinton presidential  campaign

Kamala Harris attended Howard University and is a member of a prominent black sorority (Alpha Kappa Alpha) and visited India often while growing up.

According to NY times, In her presidential campaign last year, Kamala Harris pitched herself as a history-making candidate who could appeal to both progressives and moderates.

Her policies sought incremental, targeted results, particularly focusing on historically marginalized groups like women, people of color and low-income Americans.

Kamala was elected as the first African-American and first woman to serve as California’s Attorney General. In this role, she worked tirelessly to hold corporations accountable and protect the state’s most vulnerable people.

Harris was elected to the Senate in 2016 and was the first Black woman in the chamber in more than a decade.

As a senator, Harris supported healthcare reform, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants etc.

Also, recently she been a vocal supporter of racial justice legislation in response to the killing of Floyd
