Mangaluru: Curiosity has been piqued as to who will be elected the next Mayor of Mangaluru. Parlays have begun in political circles as the day for electing the new Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 4 other standing committee members is drawing nearer.
The Mayoral elections of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) are scheduled for September 9. As announced, this time the post of Mayor is reserved for the “General” category, while the Deputy Mayor is for the “Backward Class Woman” representative.
Though there are only 3 days left in the elections, no candidate has been finalized for the post.
Hectic discussions and negotiations for candidacy have already begun. There are rumors that a corporator from Mangaluru North could be given a chance as the previous two Mayors (Premananda Shetty and Diwakar Pandeshwar) were from Mangalur South.
The names of Sarath Kumar and Jayanand are being proposed based on seniority, while Kiran Kumar and Jayanand are in the race based on the caste equation.
The post of mayor this time has gained more importance in the background of assembly elections to be held next year. Therefore, those who have political experience and the capability to lead the corporation’s administration are likely to get the post of the next mayor. For this, the names of experienced corporators are being suggested.
