Amal Clooney, the prominent human rights lawyer has quit as the United Kingdom’s special envoy for media freedom
Mrs Clooney, married to the film star George Clooney, wrote to Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary, to tell him she was quitting because of the “lamentable Bill”.
According to Telegraph, She said the UK’s actions threatened “to embolden autocratic regimes that violate international law, with devastating consequences all over the world”.
It is said that Clooney made the move due to the Internal Market Bill, which gives the British government the power to override parts of the UK’s Brexit agreement in the EU withdrawal agreement, and which some claim signals the government’s intention to breach international law and reneges on significant parts of the Brexit agreement.
Clooney sent her resignation to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and wrote, ” I have been dismayed to learn that the government intends to pass legislation, the Internal Market Bill, which would, by the government’s own admission, ‘break international law’ if enacted”
Her decision to quit follows the resignations of two other senior lawyers, the advocate general for Scotland, Lord Keen, and the head of the Government Legal Department, Sir Jonathan Jones.
