Wife commits suicide; Husband hospitalized after attempted suicide

Punjalakatte: A woman committed suicide and her husband attempted suicide on Friday, as a result of a fight that broke out between them due to the husband’s alcoholism.
The woman who committed suicide by hanging is identified as Sumati (40), wife of rickshaw driver Varada Raj, a resident of Edturupadavu within Ervattur GP limits in Bantwal. Later, Raj consumed rat poison in an attempt to commit suicide and is presently admitted at a private hospital in Mangaluru.
Varada Raj was earlier an alcoholic, but had stopped consuming alcohol since two years. However, on Friday he ended up consuming alcohol. This led to a fight between the couple followed by Sumathi going into the bathroom and committing suicide by hanging. Witnessing this, Raj went to the hil near his house, consumed rat poison in an attempt to commit suicide.
Varada Raj has been admitted at a private hospital in Mangaluru. The couple has a 5-years-old daughter. A case has been registered at Punjalakatte police station.
