Madikeri: A wild elephant trampled a man to death at Srimangala in Kodagu district on Friday May 3rd. The victim is identified as Shokira Sudhakuttappa (43), a local coffee planter. Shokira was heading towards his estate near Kaimane when the incident occurred.
The incident created much tension in the area as local people and those from various farmers organizations staged a demonstration and blocked the road blaming the Forest Department for the unending human-elephant conflict in the district.
The protesters demanded that the senior officials of the department visit the spot. They urged that proper action be taken to control the elephant menace and that the members of the deceased Shokira should be provided with government jobs.
