In a shocking incident that recently came to light, two con artists disguised as ‘Budubudike’ (shamans) swindled a woman of gold ornaments worth Rs. 2.4 lakh in Sathanur village.

Kemparajamma, a resident of the Anjaneya Temple Road in Sathanur, fell victim to the scam. Last Friday, two individuals dressed as shamans approached her home and frightened her by claiming that her husband and daughter would die within a week. They convinced her that they could remedy the situation.

The fraudsters initially took Rs. 2,000 and performed a ritual near her house. They then claimed that her house had a curse, which was the reason her daughter remained unmarried. To remove the curse, they demanded Rs. 28,000 for another ritual. Believing their story, Kemparajamma and her family handed over 5 grams of rings, 17 grams of chain, and 13.5 grams of earrings, totaling Rs. 2.4 lakh in value.

The con artists placed the jewelry in an earthen pot, wrapped it with a string, and performed a ritual. They then handed the pot back to the family, instructing them to perform another ritual the next day before opening it, promising to return. However, the next day, the shamans did not return, and when the suspicious family opened the pot, they found the jewelry missing.

Realizing they had been deceived, Kemparajamma filed a complaint at the Sathanur police station. The investigation is ongoing.
