New Delhi: A 75-year-old woman and her minor granddaughter died today and six other members of their family injured in a fire accident in Sadar Bazar area of central Delhi, an official said.
The fire was reported to the Delhi Fire Services around 8.55 AM. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot that brought the flames under control in an hour, a DFS official said.
Bhagwati and her granddaughter Urmila (8) were killed while six other members of the family sustained minor burns. The fire was started from an LPG cylinder, they said.
One Vijay lived in a building in Teliwara alongwith his mother Bhagwati, wife Priti, and two daughters Urmila and Vanshika. The fire started as Priti went to prepare tea in the kitchen and lighted the gas stove, a senior police officer said.
Vijay’s brother, Deshraj, who alarmed by cries of Vijay and his family, tried to help them along with his wife and a son. But they also sustained burns, he said.
The injured were rushed to the RML and LNJP hospitals where Bhagwati and Urmila were declared dead while others were provided treatment, the police said.
