Mangaluru: A dispute that arose between two families of a woman, allegedly over the custody of her mortal remains was resolved amicably following mediation by the Pandeshwar police.

The woman, Deepika Acharya, a Karkala resident had been admitted in a serious condition at the Wenlock hospital in the city on Wednesday. She gave birth to a baby boy after undergoing a caesarean operation at the hospital but passed away shortly after.

Following her death, a dispute arose between Deepika’s parents and her in-laws, who it is alleged demanded the gold ornaments worn by her if they were to perform her last rites. Relatives from both sides gathered at the hospital and were seen hurling accusations at each other.

After receiving a complaint, Pandeshwar police arrived at the hospital and dispersed the crowd. Later, in order to resolve the issue amicably, the police took the persons concerned to the station.

Following police mediation, the dispute between the families is said to have been resolved and Deepika’s body was handed over to her husband, Prakash Acharya family on Thursday evening after conducting the inquest.

Meanwhile, the baby boy born to the couple remains in the intensive care unit of the pediatric ward of Wenlock Hospital. Prakash Acharya has offered to take care of the baby, it is gathered.
