Mangaluru: Following the recent issue of garbage sliding down the landfill and other crisis at its landfill in Pachanady, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided not to allow neighbouring towns and villages to dump waste at the landfill.
Accordingly, MCC has given a deadline of three months to Ullal city municipality, Bantwal town municipality, Kotekar GP and other villages concerning the dumping of waste at Pachanady landfill.
It may be noted that garbage from many areas of the neighbouring villages and urban local bodies is also being dumped at Pachanady and waste management here has become a major challenge for MCC. Thus, in the backdrop of the recent incident of garbage sliding downhill from the dumping yard and its consequences compelled the concerned authorities to issue notices to local bodies.
All the local self-administrations will have to set up their own waste management units in their areas within three months, informed an MCC official and added that more machines would be procured for the quicker processing of the waste at the landfill which is presently receiving 350 tonnes of waste every day.
