Mangaluru: Fisheries and district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary stated that a world-class aquarium has been proposed to be built in coastal Karnataka and the College of Fisheries here has been instructed to find an appropriate spot for it.
He made this statement at a progress review meeting held at the College at Yekkur after the dean of the College, Professor Senthil Velu stated that there are 120 islands in Karnataka. Of these, 25 islands are more than 200 kilometres long. These can be developed as tourist destinations. A world-class aquarium could be built at Karwar in Uttara Kannada district.
Responding to this, Minister Kota said: “Find suitable land in any one of the three coastal districts without any objection from the locals. We will build an aquarium on the PPP model.”
Fishermen leaders Shashi Kumar, Nitin Kumar and Mohan Bengre said that any project to be undertaken on islands should benefit the fishing community.
Parshwanath, Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department and others from the College of Fisheries were present at the meeting.
