World Diabetes Day: Blue lighting of the Gandhi monument at Maple Beach and free diabetes screening program

Manipal: World diabetes day is observed on November 14th across the globe to increase the awareness about diabetes and take necessary actions to prevent and manage diabetes and its complications. Blue lighting of the Gandhi monument at Maple Beach was done on November 14 to mark the occasion of World Diabetes Day and increase the awareness among the public by Department of Endocrinology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

The colour blue is taken from the blue circle symbol meant to raise awareness for diabetes. This symbol was chosen by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to represent the unity needed to find a cure for diabetes.

On this occasion Dr Sahana Shetty, Professor and Head Department of Endocrinology said, “One out of every eleven people in India have type 2 diabetes and the prevalence is increasing day by day. Diabetes is the leading cause of heart disease, kidney problems, eye problems in adults, nerve problems and non traumatic foot amputations. Type 2 diabetes is preventable to a great extent by adopting healthy eating practices and being physically active from a younger age. Taking appropriate medicines prescribed by the doctor and regular checkups are essential.”

Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Dean, KMC Manipal said, this year’s theme is “Education to Protect Tomorrow. People with diabetes may prevent complications by healthy eating predominantly including fruits, vegetables, whole cereals, pulses, millets, nuts, lean meat and low fat diary being physically active, maintaining good glycemic control by appropriate medications, regular monitoring of glucose levels and screening of complications”.

Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, said “as a part of Diabetes Day, a free diabetes screening program will be organized for auto drivers, taxi drivers, bus drivers & conductors and others on Thursday, 16 November 2023 near the taxi stand at Tiger Circle, Manipal from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.
