World Ocean Day is observed annually on June 8 all over the world. The celebration aims to spread awareness about protecting the oceans for the sake of our environment.

The concept was first proposed by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit in the year 1992.

The environment is getting damaged which is gradually leading to the destruction of the earth, and damage of the ocean is one of them.

On the occasion of World Oceans Day on June 8, Tuesday, the United Nations (UN) has called for sustainable efforts and stopping plastic pollution in order to save the oceans.

They wrote, “Tuesday is #WorldOceansDay. From eating local, sustainably-sourced fish to stopping plastic pollution, we all have a role to play to #SaveOurOcean.”

This year marks the second year of a fully virtual celebration of the United Nations World Oceans Day due to the coronavirus pandemic, which hit the world last year.
