Yakshagana artist killed in road accident near Arkula Junction

A 22-year-old Yakshagana artist died in a road accident near Arkula Junction on Tuesday evening.
The deceased identified as Praveeth Kumar was a postgraduate student at Vitla First Grade College.
Praveeth, a performer with the Sasihitlu Bhagavati Yakshagana Mela, was on his way to a scheduled performance at Bajpe Kandavara Bailu. The motorbike he was riding on skidded near Arkula Junction, causing him to fall onto the road. At that time a vehicle coming from behind ran over him, resulting in his death on the spot.
Praveeth was playing a lead role in the troupe’s current production, Kathegarthi Kalpana, portraying the titular character “Kalpana.”
A Promising Talent from Belthangady
Praveeth hailed from Munduru in Badyaru village, Belthangady Taluk. He was the second of three sons of Shekhar. His elder brother is employed, and his younger sibling is pursuing education. Praveeth, who had a passion for Yakshagana, managed to balance his studies and performance to support his family.
He had secured admission for a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) at Vitla First Grade College. He was residing with his aunt in Mangaluru and commuted daily by bike and bus to Vitla for classes.
A Rising Yakshagana Star
Praveeth had been an integral part of the Sasihitlu troupe for three years. He specialized in playing female roles and also portrayed divine characters, such as the goddess in performances at Sasihitlu Bhagavati Temple. His dedication to the art form was evident from his early days, performing for the Sunkadakatte troupe while still in college.
A case has been registered at the Mangaluru City South Traffic Police Station, and further investigations are ongoing.
