Mangaluru: The six melas of Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Prasadita Yakshagana Mandala will continue their Yakshagana performances in the limited-time format.
Recently, the temple management announced a return to all-night performances starting January 14.
However, District Collector Mullai Muhilan issued an order on January 10, emphasizing strict adherence to noise pollution regulations, as per Supreme Court and High Court orders during all-night Yakshagana events.
Concerns were raised by Yaksha Bhimas and artists about potential noise pollution if loudspeakers are utilized during the nighttime performances. Some members of the Mela also urged the management committee to maintain the existing time limit. Consequently, the governing body, initially planning for full-night performances from January 14, has postponed this decision.
Given the District Collector’s directive, the Administrative Committee’s President, Kodethuruguthu Sanath Kumar Shetty, stated that they will seek legal advice regarding the legality of all-night Yakshagana performances, taking into account the High Court and Supreme Court orders. Legal counsel is expected within a week or 10 days, and until then, the performances will continue within the limited time frame, he said.
