Mangaluru: A youth jumped from Ullal bridge into Netravati river with the aim to lose his life and somehow at the last moment, he changed his mind and swam back to the river bank.

The person who made the bid to commit suicide is identified as Girish (31), a resident of Kaduru in Chikkamagaluru district and presently residing at Urwa store in Mangaluru. He has been admitted into a private hospital in the city and is said to be free from any danger to his life informed hospital sources.

Girish was indulged in the sale of tender coconut at Urwa store in the city and his wife is a employed at the city court. Girish was staying with his wife and child at the PWD quarters in Urwa.

After taking the plunge into the river, as Girish was swimming towards the river bank, some fishermen noticed Girish and came to his rescue. They also got his admitted into a private hospital in the city.

Kankanady city police have registered a case in this connection and will be taking further action.

Remembered wife and child

It is being said that Girish jumped into the river with the sole purpose of losing his life, but when in the water, he remembered his wife and child and his resolve to commit suicide became undone. People coming from Thokkottu towards Mangaluru had noticed Girish jumping into the water.

Second incident in a week

It may be noted that on July 29th, Café Coffee Day founder Siddarth went missing from the very same bridge on Wednesday morning and after a widespread search, his corpse was found at Hoigebazaar along the banks of Netravati river. It is suspected that he too successfully committed suicide by jumping off from the very same bridge. Even while the shock of this incident lies raw in the minds of the people, another person jumped off from the bridge with the same intention on Sunday.

There have been several demands since some time for the installation of CCTV cameras at the bridge, but they have not yet been fulfilled. Currently, there is a demand for the installation of protection barrier on either sides of the bridge covering the entire length of the bridge.

Police patrol facility

Police patrol facility will be started along the Ullal bridge built across the Netravati river, announced Laxmi Ganesh, DCP (crime and traffic), Mangaluru city.
