How to Cultivate Good Quality Mushroom Mushroom cultivation, the right way. In our recent visit to Mrs.Sushila Mahadev, a mushroom farmer (uchila, udupi taluk), we learnt the right way to cultivate mushrooms. She spoke about the procedure that has to be undertaken in order to get the best quality mushrooms. She says “The mushrooms that we cultivate here are of two types, oyster mushroom and milky mushroom. The oyster mushroom is well suited at a lower temperature and when the temperature increases during the summer milky mushroom is grown. Both mushrooms are cultivated in a very similar manner. They can be cultivated using any of the agricultural wastes, but since we have a lot of hay nearby we use it. The best quality hay has to be taken and chopped up to 4-5 inch and must be soaked in cold water for three to four hours in a water drum. The hay then has to be shifted to a heater making sure that the hay has up to 60% water content in it and the excess water is pressed out. Where it is steamed and then cooled for 12-24 hours. The hay is then transferred to plastic polythene bag to which the seeds are added, they are compressed and the bag is wrapped tightly in a knot. These plastic bags are then placed in a dark room for about 20 days, the room must allow certain amount of air and light to pass through it. Within the span of 20 days the buds of mushroom start appearing. On the 21st day the plastic bag has to be poked to make a few holes in it and then placed in another room, called the cultivation hall. For the oyster mushroom to be cultivated the temperature must be maintained from 20 to 28 degrees and if the temperature rises a little higher than that then the walls and floor of the room must be sprayed with water to cool it down a bit. After 5 days, the mushroom is fully grown. For the milky mushroom after the 21st day a mixture of soil, sand and chalk powder has to be added to the plastic bag. The mixture has to be steamed before adding to make sure that it is free of bacteria or external fungi. The mushroom is fully grown within a week.” She also encourages people that are planning to cultivate mushrooms saying there is abundance of agricultural wastes that can be used and also that some of the organizations and banks provide with subsidies, schemes and other sort of helps needed.
